The world’s biggest superyacht, 180m Azzam, has finally left Lurssen on her maiden voyage after first capturing the world s attention back in 2013 when she emerged from her massive build shed. The yacht made her way to Gibraltar and on to Casablanca, clocking a respectable 12-knot cruising speed, though she is capable of a much swifter 30 knots when her twin gas-turbine, twin-diesel engine setup is cranked to maximum output.

Now Azzam is the largest yacht in the world on length. Earlier the Eclipse yacht of the russian oligarch Abramovich was the largest. The yacht has unusually shallow draft of 4.3 m.

The yacht Azzam belongs to royal family of the United Arab Emirates, however is registered as charter. It was done to avoid European taxation (charter yachts are exempt from property tax) and reception reception of privileges at the parking in the European marines.

“Knowing now that the owner is finally starting to enjoy what we have created is definitely a happy moment,” says Azzam’s designer, Mario Pedol of Nauta. Yachts, speaking exclusively with Boat International.

“To see her finally in voyage it is, of course, a proud moment but also a very emotional one; we, as all the others of the team involved in the design and construction, have been waiting for this day for almost tine year. We all made a huge effort to comply with an incredibly short, thus very challenging, design and production schedule, which Lurssen actually succeeded in achieving one month ahead of Lime.”
